To advance and shape the global tourism model, the first World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) World Conference on Smart Destinations was held on February 15 – 17 in Murcia, Spain.

A few weeks after the launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development by UNWTO, the event brought together government representatives, private sector entities, researchers and academics, as well as technology centres to discuss key issues in the agenda of the sector, such as innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.

"These themes, which are priorities of the work of the UNWTO, define 21st century tourism, committed to ecosystems, local cultures and to economic and social development," explained Taleb Rifai, secretary-general, UNWTO.
