In January, more than 2.2 million passengers passed through Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA), representing a year-on-year boost of 2.6 percent.

Additionally, aircraft movements also rose one percent over January 2016, with a total of 14,666 take-offs and landings.

Notably, traffic between the capital and India was one of the most popular routes, up two percent, followed by the UK which grew 14.1 percent compared to the same month in 2016.

Boosted by Etihad's four daily flights, passenger numbers to Egypt grew significantly with an 18.4 percent surge, also supported by Fly Egypt's service to Alexandria.

The top five destinations were London, Bangkok, Mumbai, Doha and Jeddah, which all saw substantial rises, up 23 percent, two percent, 13 percent, two percent and four percent, respectively.
