According to STR's January 2017 Pipeline Report, there were 159,581 keys in 556 properties under contract in the Middle East, a year-on-year increase of 5.1 percent in rooms.

Meanwhile, there were 85,827 units in 269 hotels in the in construction phase, which, in terms of rooms, is an increase of 6.8 percent compared to January 2016.

Saudi Arabia had the most keys in construction, with 36,742 rooms in 85 projects, followed by the UAE with 28,898 in 99 developments and Qatar with 8,464 units in 34 addresses. Meanwhile, in Africa, despite a 5.4 percent decline in rooms under contract, there was a 4.8 increase in the number of rooms in construction, with Egypt leading the way with 5,734 keys in 14 hotels.
