International Travelers Prefer Spending More Time In The Spanish City

There are two opposite types of tourist: the typical backpacker who goes with a budget squared to the millimeter, and the one who doesn’t look at prices when on vacation. For the latter, some cities offer all kinds of temptations: restaurants, shops, attractions, hotels, exclusive experiences.

The list to have fun, when you have many zeros in your account, is very long, you just have to know how to choose the right places. The latest research from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) collects which are the most prominent based on the spending made by international travelers in 2022.

In this selection of 10 world destinations, a Spanish city appears in seventh place, ahead of New York, Singapore and Paris. We are talking, of course, about Barcelona, which lately has been making its way into all the rankings.

It is enough to take a walk through L’Eixample, to stumble upon a lot of restaurants and shops that seem to say on the door “deposit your kidney here before entering”.

Last year, international visitors left 12.73 billion dollars in Barcelona. And, although being a normal tourist is not cheap either (only the entrance to the Sagrada Familia already costs €26), quite large accounts are needed to cover such an amount.

At the Sutton nightclub, for example, you can reserve a VIP table from €300 and order a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal Jeroboam champagne for €7,000.

You also have the option of reserving a night in the Majestic’s Royal Penthouse, the best suite on the planet, for €18,000 or spending an afternoon shopping in the exclusive fashion stores of Paseo de Gracia. According to one of the Italian firms installed there, with the presence of tourists the collection can be multiplied by three and exceed 100,000 euros in a single day.

Despite the insecurity problems, travelers with high purchasing power feel comfortable in Barcelona. With an average age of 45, they spend an average of €600 per day and pay more than €500 per hotel night. They have to choose, 15% of the total accommodation in the city is 5-star or great luxury. And to eat, there are 30 restaurants with Michelin stars.
