Larnaca Undertook Seabed and Beach Cleaning Campaign

The Cyprus Association for Sustainable Tourism (CSTI) in collaboration with the Larnaca Tourism Board and with the support of the Municipality of Larnaca and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, recently organised a campaign entitled ‘Combating plastic pollution in the Mediterranean’.

The action took place in the framework of the BeMed programme ‘Plastic Free Entertainment Cruises and Water Sports Activities’, which is an initiative of international organisations including the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation.

Specifically, 60 volunteers were divided into three groups and cleaned the seabed of Marina Larnaca and Psarolimanos as well as Mackenzie beach. The cleaning campaign collected a total of 1470 kg of waste from the seabed, including tires, batteries, bicycles, fans, chairs, kitchen utensils, tins and many other items, while mainly bottles, cigarette butts and plastic straws were collected from the beach.

The volunteers consisted of divers from the diving schools Viking Divers, Zenobia Diving Center, Hippocampus Group, Dive-In Larnaca, Podvodnyi Mir, Aquadream and the Beach Cleaning team while supported by the shipping companies AAK Larnaca-Napa Sea Cruises and Atlantis Cruises. The watersports centers Windsurfcity Cyprus, Mckenzie Watersports and K&L Finikoudes Watersports also participated.
