EC Donates USD223 Million to Africa's Sahel Countries

As the Sahel region experiences its worst food and nutrition crisis in five years and continued insecurity, the European Commission (EC) announced a humanitarian aid package worth EUR191.3 million (USD223 million).

“Our new support aims to reach more than 1.1 million people in need of emergency food assistance while supporting treatment to over 650,000 severely malnourished children," said Christos Stylianides, commissioner, humanitarian aid and crisis management, EC.

The assistance will go to eight countries in the region: Burkina Faso EUR11.1 million (USD13 million), Chad EUR40.2 million (USD47 million), Cameroon EUR13.9 million (USD16 million), Mali EUR35.3 million (USD41 million), Mauritania EUR11.4 million (USD13 million), Niger EUR32.2 million (USD38 million), Nigeria EUR35.3 million (USD41 million), and Senegal EUR1 million (USD1.2 million). In addition, regional funds amounting to EUR10.8 million (USD13 million) will also be allocated.
