Cape Verde Records Loggerhead Sea Turtle Increase

Cape Verdean environmental conservation organisations, Projeto Biodiversidade and BIOS.CV, have jointly contributed, with the support of RIU Hotels & Resorts, to increase the number of loggerhead sea turtle nests around the archipelago.

Projeto Biodiversidade recorded 7,634 new nests in 2017, twice as many as 2016’s 4,120 nests, while BIOS.CV in Boa Vista recorded 4,688 nests, consolidating a very significant and steady increase.

Considering that the loggerhead is among the 11 most endangered sea turtle species on the planet, RIU Hotels & Resorts, BIOS and Projeto Biodiversidade decided to strengthen their partnership in order to protect the country’s wildlife. RIU finances the structural expenses of the non-governmental organisations and collaborates in sustaining volunteers, while BIOS and Projeto Biodiversidade focus on species survival by observing and protecting turtle hatchlings.
